Consulting the Community

Dear Parents/Guardians:

During the Updated Facilities Plan consultation, there was discussion of catchment areas for schools and facilities that have low capacity utilization. As a result, staff recognized an increase in enrolment and home construction in the Park Avenue Community School catchment.

At a February Business Committee meeting, I provided historical and projected enrolment for the Park Avenue catchment, along with a proposal to address the growing student population in the area for the 2017-18 school year.

Consultation on catchment-area adjustments for Park Avenue, Brechin, Forest Park, Mountain View, Fairview, Georgia Avenue and Bayview elementary schools has begun. You are receiving this letter because you have a child attending one of the schools mentioned above.

In the past, the district had made changes in catchment areas to address enrolment fluctuations. During these circumstances, currently enrolled students and siblings are given the option to continue at their current school or move to their new catchment school. The choice is entirely up to you.

Families living in the affected areas will receive a letter requesting their feedback on the proposed changes. I encourage you to fill out the form and return it by Friday, March 25, 2016 by emailingcommunications@sd68.bc.ca or by sending the completed form to:

Catchment-Area Changes Consultation
Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools
395 Wakesiah Avenue
Nanaimo, BC V9R 3K6

If you are not a family living in the affected area, you can still provide feedback.
You will also have the opportunity to present at the Business Committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 9 at 6 p.m. Please register your intent to present by emailing Kelsey Toye atkelsey.toye@sd68.bc.ca or by calling (250) 741-5238 by Friday, March 4 at 4 p.m.

Your time is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

John Blain,
Superintendent/CEO
